W.E.B. "Tree Green" Du Bois

Hey! My name is Tree Green! But today, you can call me W.E.B. Du Bois!

You may know me as the Co-Founder of the NAACP or the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University!

I was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts on February 23rd, 1868 and died one day before Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech! (The speech was on August 28th, 1963)

Growing up in the North, I was not able to analyze racism until I moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1885.

After graduating from Fisk University in Nashville, I was accepted into Harvard University where I earned my Master’s degree in 1895.

In 1899, I released my first published work named, “The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study”. In this study of an African American community, I coined the phrase “The Talented Tenth”. A phrase to describe the chances that 1 in 10 Black Men would become leaders of their race.

In 1909, I Co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was the editor of its monthly magazine named “The Crisis”!

Today I am W.E.B. Du Bois, and so are you!
