Harriet "Mello #2" Tubman

Hey! My name is Mello #2. But today, you can call me Harriet Tubman!
You may know me as the leader of the “Underground Railroad” and freedom pioneer before the American Civil War.
I was born in 1820 in Dorchester County, Maryland and passed on March 10th, 1913
In 1849, I first discovered what would become the “Underground Railroad” when I escaped slavery on my own and found myself on free land in Pennsylvania. I could have lived a free life out of harm’s way, but I went back to save more of my people!

In the 1850’s, I earned the nickname of “Moses” when I made 19 trips back and forth from the South to North freeing hundreds of slaves!
During the Civil War from 1861-65, I went from being a cook and nurse to quickly becoming an armed scout and first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war! The “Combahee River Raid” led by me, freed over 700 hundred slaves in South Carolina!

Today, I have dozens of schools and institutions named after me, an old folk’s home in Auburn, New York, and the Harriet Tubman Museum!
Today, I am Harriet Tubman, and so are you!
